Will Driftwood, to Jack Sparrow

"Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Dark Chocolate", also known as "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl", is episode 199 of the series Real-Time Fandub. It premiered on March 17, 2021 on YouTube (audio-only) and Patreon (full cut). It is the first installment of the Driftwood Saga, being one of three films from the Pirates of the Caribbean film series dubbed as part of a cohesive story.

The episode succeeds "Back to the Future Part II" as the second reunion of the 2016 voice cast, celebrating the birthdays of show creator Charley, and the show's co-editor Arbër. It was later screened with visuals on Picarto on October 3, 2021, and then a second time on March 19, 2022 together with "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" as part of a double-feature livestream special.[1][2] It was made freely available in full on April 13, 2022 on driftwoodsaga.carrd.co.

Synopsis[]

After finding a boy named Will Driftwood in the middle of the sea one day, Elizabeth Swann steals a chocolate gold-foil coin from him. Many years later, she discovers that the chocolate is cursed and turns people into Spooky Scary Skeletons, which attracted its victim and make-up artist Barbossa and his pirate ship, the Black Pearl, who are looking for it. Will becomes an underappreciated blacksmith with an identity crisis, while captain Jack Sparrow loses his dinghy and needs to get it back with the power of Lady Luck. The three converge together to bring the chocolate to its final resting place.

Production notes[]

The reunion episode was teased on December 21, 2020 on Charley's Discord server. The episode was recorded on January 9, 2021, following rehearsals the day prior. A post featuring Jack Sparrow's P tattoo was shared two days later on cooldude618. Charley shared raw images of their pirate cosplay in two-face makeup, meant to portray both Barbossa and Will (since they were being played by the same person), not long before the poster was released along with a date and time on January 19, 2021. The poster also featured artwork by Sim, and Ella in cosplay, edited by Arbër.

A preview was posted on TikTok on January 29, 2021 including a shanty by Sim accompanying a visual of a vinyl record being played. Another teaser featuring Steven singing the Real-Time Fandub Title Theme was shared on Charley's YouTube story. The complete trailer was released everywhere on March 15, 2021.

Songs featured[]

The following songs were used in the episode itself.

The following songs were used in the promotional material for the episode.

  • "Humours of Fandub" by Sim and the Dim Bulb (spoofing the traditional Irish folk song "Humours of Whiskey")
  • "Real-Time Fandub Main Title Theme" by Ella Cesari, sung by Steven Grimes
  • "Monkey Island Theme Song - Pirates of the Caribbean Style" by Ivan Titkov (originally composed by Michael Land)

Remaining soundtrack from the Tales of Monkey Island Original Soundtrack by Michael Land.

Continuity[]

  • This is the third dub to air on Charley's birthday (March 17), the first after a time-skip of two years since the previous episode in 2018 ("Bottomless Pit!", Gravity Falls).
  • The dub's music choice parallels the first episode of the show ever made, "Tales of Monkey Island".
  • This is the first episode which has been edited live on stream, as well as the first to have been aired on Picarto after the end of the show's Picarto-livestream era.

Name changes[]

  • Will Turner's name is changed to Will Driftwood, which is a reference to Guybrush Threepwood from the Tales of Monkey Island series, who was mistakenly called "Cap'n Driftwood" by Haggis McHutton in The Curse of Monkey Island.[4] This is further confirmed by Jack and Will's comment about his name being "Will U", since Guybrush's middle name is "Ulysses".

Trivia[]

  • The episode was teased using a screenshot of the film where Jack Sparrow's arm tattoo is revealed by James Norrington.[5]
  • The poster for this movie dub was made by Arbër, spoofing the original movie's poster. Anjo's likeness was drawn by Sim, while Shelby helped Charley with make-up advice.[6]
    • Since Charley plays two of the main characters, Will Turner and Hector Barbossa, who are both in the original poster separately, they portrayed both characters in one pose and used make-up to show them on each half of their face.
  • The editing process for the episode was aired live on three occasions during the month of March on the show's official Picarto channel.[7]
  • The first 20 minutes were edited by Arbër, the rest was edited by Charley.
